Some Common Knowledge About Metal Rockwell Hardness Testers

Metal Rockwell hardness tester The manufacturer defines Rockwell hardness as the value obtained by measuring the difference in indentation depth produced by the indenter before and after applying the major test force, following the application of an initial test force with a specified indenter.

Metal Rockwell hardness tester manufacturers contend that the testing and evaluation of material strength are fundamental requirements for on-site structural inspections. For assessing the strength of existing steel structures, the conventional approach involves taking field samples for tensile strength tests and chemical analysis; however, this method is not only time‑consuming and labor‑intensive but also causes significant damage to the structure and is impractical for large‑scale sampling in cases where structural drawings are unavailable. Consequently, in recent years, an increasing number of nondestructive testing techniques—such as the hardness method—have been widely adopted.

Metal Rockwell hardness tester manufacturers consider hardness to be one of the most commonly used indicators for evaluating the mechanical properties of metallic materials. At its core, hardness is a material’s ability to resist indentation by a harder material. For the material being tested, hardness reflects a composite property that encompasses elasticity, plasticity, strength, toughness, and wear resistance under specified indenter and test‑force conditions. Hardness testing can reveal differences in metallic materials arising from variations in chemical composition, microstructure, and heat‑treatment processes; accordingly, it is widely employed for assessing material performance, monitoring heat‑treatment quality, and developing new materials.

Metal Rockwell hardness tester manufacturers define Rockwell hardness as an index that determines the hardness value based on the depth of plastic deformation produced by an indentation, with 0.002 mm serving as the unit of hardness. In Rockwell hardness testing, using different indenters and test forces yields various combinations, each corresponding to a distinct Rockwell hardness scale. There are three commonly used scales, whose applications cover virtually all standard metallic materials.

Metal Rockwell hardness tester manufacturers recommend the following tips for using a Rockwell hardness tester:

  1. Before use, first check that the durometer is placed on a level, stable surface. If it is unstable, adjust the base until it is steady. To ensure proper leveling, verify that the weight suspended inside the rear cover does not come into contact with the support bracket—neither on the left or right side nor with the inner or outer walls.

  2. Turn on the power switch; the indicator light should illuminate. If it does not, have an electrician check whether the power outlet is receiving mains voltage. If mains power is present, verify that the fuse is functioning properly. Also, inspect components such as the light bulb, its circuitry, and the transformer to ensure they are operating correctly.

  3. Metal Rockwell hardness testers should be compared with standard hardness blocks before use to verify that the instrument is functioning properly. If it is not operating correctly, discontinue use and have a qualified technician perform calibration.

  4. After the readings have stabilized, the test specimen should be prepared accordingly. For circular or triangular specimens, a V‑shaped support should be used; for other shapes, two parallel surfaces are recommended, as uneven surface profiles can compromise measurement accuracy and damage the hardness indenter of the alloy steel.

  5. Unplug the power cord promptly after use.

  6. Metal Rockwell hardness testers should be cleaned after use, and the lifting screw and worktable should be promptly cleaned, lubricated, and maintained.
